This past week is one of my favorite weeks of the year. It’s not a vacation or a week at the beach. It’s orientation week! This is a week our mission board has for all our missionaries to come together for training from veteran missionaries and church staff. Believe me when I say, we need the training. To think that we shouldn’t need it would be a mistake. Most all professions with few exceptions require some amount of training. Even my first paying job as a teenager had several courses of training. Few, if any us, would see doctors who haven’t studied and trained for years to do the exceptional work that they perform. Should we look at missions and church planting any differently?
So this week, it’s all about preparing us for the field. The portion of our ministries that churches can see is a small glimpse of the investment and preparation in the life of a missionary. That’s the product but it’s not the process. It’s the behind the scenes process God works in our lives that brings the product. It was said this week, “The secret of the trees is not what you see. It’s in the roots.” Weeks like this, that are filled with training and investment, let us see dividends for years to come. It’s growing the roots!
