Dear Pastors and praying friends,
The six months since we have arrived in Indonesia have passed so quickly. Every day still seems full with new experiences and opportunities for us to learn culture and language, both of which can be challenging at times. The real benefit is with each new bit of understanding and knowledge, we gain more freedom to interact and connect with those around us, which pushes us toward our entire goal of connecting them with Christ.
The month of fasting for Muslims, Ramadan, ended just a few weeks ago. You could feel the heightened awareness all around. Many restaurants and vendors close for the day, but those that remain open cover their windows, so as not to offend those who are fasting. Nightly sessions of Muslim teaching and prayers are broadcasted over the loud speakers for all to hear. Every afternoon at sunset, it became a mad race through the streets for people to return home and break the fast. They do all this, yet still they do not know the grace of Christ. They have a zeal toward a false god and perish without knowledge and faith. Please pray for more ability and opportunity for us.
One of the more difficult parts of our time learning the language is the feeling of almost being sidelined from participating in ministry. Thankfully we were given an opportunity to lead an activity this past month for a group of students studying English. The pastor’s wife of our church we attend teaches English and arranged three days for us to spend with them during a break in the school schedule. The part I loved was speaking to these teenagers who are outside of the church culture. We averaged 20 teenagers a day. Half of them professed to be Christians but from a works based system and rarely have even been to a church. The others were a mix of Buddhist and Muslim. We taught them songs with doctrine. We gave testimonies and played a few games. I was grateful to preach to them. More than half made a profession of faith in Christ! The Pastor conducted the invitation in both English and Bahasa to make certain of their understanding. Pray as we follow up with these young people.
